Route 66
63
I saw her in my dreams
Curves that went on forever
It made my heart hot,
Flashing lights in ghost towns
Floating like stars in butter
As if time had stopped
Dinosaurs make jokes
As the tourists drive by
But no one stops to inquire,
Pale faces peer from windows
Asking silly questions why
As history hangs from a wire
Route 66
Where grandma and grandpa kissed
The cities where legends dwell
And modern society missed
The stars stayed at the Monte Vista Motel
Now only ghosts exist
On Route 66
My wheel just seemed to turn
From the blinding interstate-
I was in a different world,
No brilliant lights accosted me
No salesman made me wait
Time slowly unfurled
I could see the faces
Of thousands of boys and girls
In the back seat of spaceships,
Trying to catch the moon
In their tiny little fists
Somewhere lost on Route 66
Route 66
Where grandma and grandpa kissed
A place where legends are told
Modern society missed
As wishes on falling stars bend low
Now only relics exist
On Route 66

Absolutely Great...Classic Marker of Time and Americana...captured extremely well! I love that dang ol' highway...and you did a great job of capturing time and events on Route Sixty Six...I like how you mentioned back in time with grandma and grandpa kissing. Then, hinted about the lil' kiddies stuck in the back of some of those ol' huge cars...just going anywhere! : ) (and with the dinosaurs looking on)...How real..capturing detail in a great poem and theme. The only thing wrong with this poem is...I didn't think of it first! Welcome to Hub Pages...Bring it with the "Manly" Poems...Adios, my friend.
Very NICE!! Blessings!!!
Makes me really want to take a trip on Route 66. Just recently I have acquired an interest in this historic route, even checking out a book at the library and doing some internet research. Perhaps after my husband retires we can make that trip down Route 66.
Nice one dear thanks for this most touchy hubs
I've traveled on parts of the route. It takes you back in time. A fantastic tribute to Route 66, Chad.
This is very different poetry and I liked it.
You have a very keen descriptive gift. I like it very much.
You wrote this yourself? It sounds like such a classic piece of literature! I have always loved the word "relic" and I think it's perfect for this piece
Very good work Chad.
Nice! I really liked this one. I can hear it playing in my head.
So you are a poet too. I was particularly touched by the one about Christ.
Wow, this was neat. I grew up on route 66, and have done a lot of road work on it. Loved this poem. You took me back to it. Thanks.
